UK requires sovereign compute capacity to secure AI infrastructure, minister says
UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan stated the country needs a sovereign level of compute capability and must build data centers aligned with British values.
Speaking at the Labour Party's annual conference in Liverpool, Britain's Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan outlined the government's strategy regarding technology adoption and security. Narayan stated that the United Kingdom must establish a "sovereign level of compute" to maintain national control over critical digital infrastructure.
Addressing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence deployment and data center expansion, the minister emphasized that domestic facilities should be constructed in alignment with national priorities. "The way we have to build data centers in this country has to be with a sense of control and a sense of British values," Narayan said. The comments highlight the government's intention to balance rapid AI integration with national sovereignty over computing power.
