UK refuses to expand £1.5bn Northern Ireland funding offer

The UK government has declined to increase its £1.5 billion financial package for Stormont, despite warnings over rising public sector costs.
The UK government has rejected requests to increase its three-year financial package for the Northern Ireland Executive beyond the £1.5 billion offered earlier this month. Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant had previously raised the proposal from an initial £1.1 billion, but regional ministers argued that further assistance was necessary to address mounting fiscal demands.
The decision comes alongside warnings from the Northern Ireland Fiscal Council, which highlighted a "structural tension between the cost of maintaining the workforce and the funding available to do so." The independent body cautioned that public sector employment costs are rising faster than UK funding, presenting regional leaders with difficult choices to sustain public services.
