A standoff in Portadown continues after counter-protesters blocked an Orange Order march on Garvaghy Road despite a Belfast High Court ruling allowing the procession.

A standoff in Portadown has heightened political tensions across Northern Ireland after thousands of counter-protesters prevented an Orange Order parade from passing through Garvaghy Road on Sunday. The march, which had been approved by the Parades Commission and upheld by a late-night Belfast High Court ruling, was scheduled to conclude by mid-morning. However, the 35 marchers remained at Drumcree Church as local residents blocked the designated route.

The dispute reflects broader political friction within Stormont. Unionist leaders have accused opponents of defying the rule of law, while nationalist residents view the procession as sectarian intimidation along a predominantly nationalist thoroughfare. Local officials and march organizers continue negotiations to defuse the situation, which marks the first permitted procession along the route since 1998.
