Debates over political extremism, historical memory, and education intensify across eastern Germany ahead of upcoming state elections.

Ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany, debates surrounding regional identity, historical education, and political extremism are intensifying. Teachers in eastern schools have reported a noticeable increase in far-right behavior among students, including the use of illegal symbols and nationalist songs. In response to gaps in historical knowledge, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for SED dictatorship victims, called for mandatory student visits to East German memorial sites.

Simultaneously, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt has drawn criticism over plans to strip public funding from cultural projects deemed "anti-German," creating concern for Holocaust memorials and local theaters. Separately, Berlin faces administrative challenges as official data showed nearly 400 public school teachers have been on medical leave for over a year.
