Swedish insurers warn risky municipal building plans could drive up home premiums

Insurance Sweden warns that continued housing construction on climate-vulnerable land will lead to sharp insurance premium increases for property owners.
The Swedish insurance industry has issued a warning regarding municipality housing development on flood-prone and climate-vulnerable land. According to trade organisation Insurance Sweden (Svensk Försäkring), continued construction in high-risk zones threatens to significantly increase future property insurance costs for homeowners. Pär Karlsson, a representative at Insurance Sweden, stated that "the level of ambition is too low" among local authorities when factoring climate adaptation into local planning decisions. The sector cautions that without stricter zoning regulations and enhanced preventative measures, property owners will ultimately bear the financial burden of escalating climate-related disasters across the country.
