Spanish housing protest figure Maricarmen Abascal dies aged 87

Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old Spanish pensioner whose eviction sparked nationwide protests and forced snap elections, has died in Madrid.
Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old Spanish pensioner whose eviction sparked nationwide protests over housing affordability and triggered a political crisis leading to snap elections, has died, according to Madrid's tenants' union.
Abascal passed away two weeks after being forcibly removed on a stretcher from her apartment in Madrid's Retiro neighborhood, where she had resided for over seven decades. Her removal followed an unsustainable rent increase after the property was acquired by an investment firm in 2018.
Her eviction, broadcast live on television, galvanized mass demonstrations demanding stricter regulations on evictions and rental market controls. The resulting public unrest increased pressure on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s minority government, eventually prompting the call for early general elections.
