Scholar Alpo Rusi details how Soviet intelligence targeted former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa with threats ahead of a presidential transition in 1980.

Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has disclosed further details on Soviet intelligence operations targeting Finnish leadership near the end of the Cold War. Writing for Iltalehti, Rusi detailed pressure and intimidation directed at Keijo Liinamaa, a former prime minister and national conciliator, shortly before his death in 1980.

According to the analysis, Soviet intelligence aimed to manipulate internal political dynamics and manage the transition following President Urho Kekkonen's long tenure. Liinamaa reportedly confided to a diplomat that he faced personal threats linked to these foreign influence efforts. The accounts highlight Moscow's broader strategy to maintain political leverage over Helsinki during sensitive succession periods.
