South Korea and US shorten joint military drills following Trump request
South Korea and the US have agreed to cut their joint military drills short by six days and scale back operations following a directive from US President Donald Trump.
South Korea's defence ministry has announced that annual joint military exercises with the United States will be shortened by six days following a proposal from Washington.
The 2026 Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, which commenced on Monday, will now conclude on 21 August rather than 27 August, alongside a reduction in the scope of certain operations. The adjustment follows US President Donald Trump's directive to curtail participation, in which he labelled the maneuvers "costly" and argued they send a signal that is "completely inappropriate and hostile" toward North Korea.
While Trump cited positive relations with Pyongyang, allied defense officials had previously emphasized concerns regarding North Korea's evolving tactical capabilities.
