Serbian media groups report rising threats and violence against journalists

Serbian media organizations have reported a sharp increase in threats and violence against journalists and public figures during July and early August 2026.

The Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia documented 19 safety incidents in July, including two physical assaults and 14 death threats. Concurrently, the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation recorded more than 100 verbal attacks by government and ruling party officials. Key incidents include an online death threat against the editor of local outlet Volim Zrenjanin and a physical assault in Belgrade on director Stevan Filipović, which triggered a prosecutorial investigation.

Meanwhile, press groups also condemned harassment targeting pro-government figures, including an uninvited individual visiting the home of Informer editor Dragan J. Vučićević. Journalism associations have called on law enforcement authorities to swiftly investigate all incidents and prosecute those responsible.
