Russia's economy faces potential stagnation as central bank adjusts interest rates
Russia faces economic stagnation as its central bank lowers interest rates to 14 percent and downgrades GDP growth forecasts amid slowing demand.
Russia's economy is approaching a period of stagnation, according to Jakub M. Godzimirski, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. The assessment follows recent monetary policy decisions by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which lowered its key interest rate to 14 percent.
Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina noted that real-time indicators point toward declining demand across various sectors. Factoring in a temporary reduction in economic capacity, the central bank downgraded its growth forecast for gross domestic product. Analysts suggest that diminishing demand combined with structural constraints continues to weigh heavily on the country's economic outlook despite recent efforts to ease borrowing conditions.
