Russian strikes hit Ukrainian cities as Kyiv faces growing political tensions
Deadly Russian strikes struck Kyiv and regional centres across Ukraine overnight, while political debate intensified over holding wartime elections and confirming a new defense minister.
Russian forces conducted extensive overnight missile and drone strikes across Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported severe damage to residential and energy infrastructure, with casualties exceeding a dozen fatalities and dozens wounded. Russian authorities stated that air defences intercepted Ukrainian drones targeted at Moscow.
In Kyiv, political tensions grew as former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov urged authorities to restore democratic elections, stating governance cannot remain suspended indefinitely during wartime. The call arrived alongside anti-corruption inquiries targeting figures connected to the presidential administration and a parliamentary vote to confirm Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister.
