Russian strikes hit Kyiv and regional infrastructure following deadly Kryvyi Rih attack
Russian missile and drone attacks targeted Kyiv and regional infrastructure following a deadly strike in Kryvyi Rih, as Western allies discussed defense assistance.
Russian forces launched a coordinated overnight barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv, causing power outages and structural damage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated the assault was planned "to cause the largest damage possible to civilian infrastructure."
The strikes follow an attack on a Kryvyi Rih shopping center that killed 15 people and injured 130, prompting condemnation from European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Zelensky subsequently appealed to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to help halt the conflict.
On defense matters, Western allies met following decisions by France and the United Kingdom to permit local production of Scalp cruise missiles in Ukraine. Italian leadership reaffirmed its opposition to sending troops or joining planned October multinational maneuvers.
