Russian family fears confessed murderer may receive pardon through war service
A Russian family fears a confessed killer may avoid prison and receive state honors by enlisting to fight in Ukraine.
The family of a murder victim in Russia has expressed concern that the confessed perpetrator could avoid prison by joining military forces in Ukraine. Viktorija Pervusheva, whose sister was killed and burned in January 2024, told reporters that the killer might receive state honors instead of serving a prison sentence.
Under Russian legal mechanisms established during the conflict, individuals facing criminal prosecution or incarceration can obtain pardons or suspended sentences by enlisting for combat duties. Victim advocacy groups and relatives have repeatedly raised alarms about violent offenders returning to society following military deployment.
