Qatari mediation continues despite US demands for Iranian compensation
Qatari mediators continue diplomacy over the Strait of Hormuz as US compensation demands and recent strikes complicate potential agreements with Iran.
Diplomatic efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz continue as Qatari officials maintain contact with Iranian leaders. Qatar's Prime Minister recently held talks with Iran's foreign minister, focusing on returning to previous maritime arrangements in the strategic waterway.
However, prospects for a rapid diplomatic breakthrough face complications. US President Donald Trump stated that Washington will demand financial "compensation" from Tehran for historical attacks targeting overseas opponents and Iranian protesters. The demand follows recent US military strikes against Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island, the first American strikes on Iranian territory in a month.
Meanwhile, Iran announced progress on a bilateral navigation agreement with Oman, having approved geographical coordinates for a new maritime route, provided third parties do not interfere.
