Poland plans four underground hospitals for crisis readiness

Poland is moving forward with plans to construct four underground hospitals by 2029 to prepare for potential security crises and military conflicts.
Poland has announced plans to construct four underground hospitals in its north-central Kuyavian-Pomeranian region to bolster preparedness for potential national crises and armed conflicts. The facilities are scheduled for completion by 2029 at an estimated cost of 270 million złoty (approximately €63 million).
The medical shelters will be located in the cities of Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Włocławek, and Świecie. Integrated into existing hospital systems, the underground units aim to maintain continuity of critical healthcare during severe emergencies or military threats. The initiative reflects broader regional efforts across Eastern Europe to reinforce civil defense and healthcare infrastructure resilience.
