Over 170 Greenlandic women apply for compensation in involuntary birth control case
A total of 171 Greenlandic women applied for compensation during the first month of a scheme for those subjected to involuntary birth control up to 1991.
A total of 171 Greenlandic women submitted applications for compensation during the first month of a new official scheme addressing historical involuntary birth control practices. The portal opened on July 1, offering a financial settlement of 300,000 Danish kroner to women who had intrauterine devices inserted without informed consent up to 1991.
The compensation scheme follows years of political scrutiny regarding historic contraceptive policies in Greenland. Concurrently, personal searches continue into other historical ties, including descendants of American military personnel stationed in Greenland during World War II.
