A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remains blocked by thousands of counter-protesters on Garvaghy Road despite a High Court ruling allowing the march.

The controversial Orange Order parade in Portadown remains at a standstill after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road on Sunday, preventing participants from completing their route.

The procession of 35 marchers was scheduled to take place between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. following an early-morning High Court decision upholding the Parades Commission's approval. However, the group failed to depart from Drumcree Church as demonstrators occupied the predominantly nationalist thoroughfare.

The impasse marks the first time since 1998 that the order was granted permission to march along the route, a historic flashpoint during the Troubles. Political leaders at Stormont remain sharply divided over the standoff, with unionists demanding respect for the judicial ruling while nationalists frame the march as sectarian intimidation. Discussions between police, authorities, and organizers remain ongoing.
