A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remains blocked by approximately 2,000 counter-protesters along Garvaghy Road, preventing 35 marchers from departing Drumcree Church as scheduled on Sunday morning.
The Belfast High Court had upheld an adjudication by the Parades Commission during an unprecedented late-night session, clearing the procession to proceed between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. It marks the first time since 1998 that the Protestant group was granted permission to navigate the predominantly nationalist area.
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin criticized the authorization, describing the initial ruling as "incomprehensible and wrong." Amid rising local tensions, organizers entered discussions as political leaders called for calm.
