A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was blocked by thousands of counter-protesters on Sunday despite a High Court ruling allowing the parade.

A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown, Northern Ireland, remained stalled on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked its planned route along Garvaghy Road.

An unprecedented early-morning Belfast High Court ruling had upheld a decision by the Parades Commission allowing 35 marchers to conduct a silent procession past the predominantly nationalist area between 8:00 and 9:30 am. It marked the first time the march was permitted along the route since the late 1990s, when the historic flashpoint was associated with violent clashes.

However, police halted the procession from advancing from Drumcree Church to prevent clashes as a large crowd gathered on Garvaghy Road, joined by political figures including First Minister Michelle O'Neill. Organisers entered discussions with authorities to resolve the impasse while demonstrators and parade participants remained at the site.
