Standoff continues in Portadown as protesters block Orange Order parade

Tensions persist in Portadown as thousands of counter-protesters prevented a contentious Orange Order parade from passing through the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday. A late-night High Court ruling had upheld a decision by the Parades Commission allowing a restricted silent march of 35 participants for the first time since the late 1990s.

Police intervened near Drumcree Church to halt the marchers after prominent figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined the demonstration. Although the designated time window for the parade lapsed, both groups remained present as community representatives and officials entered talks to resolve the standoff at the historic flashpoint.
