Thousands of counter-protesters blocked a contentious Orange Order march in Portadown, Northern Ireland, despite a Belfast High Court ruling permitting the route.

Tensions remained high in Portadown, Northern Ireland, on Sunday after police halted a contentious Orange Order procession following a massive counter-protest along Garvaghy Road.

An early-morning Belfast High Court decision had upheld a Parades Commission ruling permitting 35 marchers to complete a silent procession past the predominantly nationalist district. It marked the first time the parade was allowed along the historic flashpoint since late-1990s restrictions were introduced around the Good Friday Agreement.

However, thousands of demonstrators, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered on Garvaghy Road to block the route. Police subsequently prevented the marchers from advancing past Drumcree Church to avoid violent clashes. Parade organisers entered discussions with authorities as both groups remained at the site.
