Police face questions after a man charged with murdering his girlfriend in Nærbø was released following an assault arrest nine days earlier.

Norwegian police are facing public scrutiny following new details in the murder investigation of 30-year-old Maren Sømme, who died in hospital after being found severely injured in Nærbø on Sunday.

Authorities confirmed that Sømme's 34-year-old boyfriend, who denies criminal guilt, was arrested and released just nine days prior to the attack on charges of committing violence against her.

In Trondheim, police have requested three weeks of pre-trial custody for a man in his 20s charged with attempted murder following a violent incident between acquaintances on Sunday.

In a separate case, a British court found a 19-year-old Norwegian national from Stavanger guilty of planning a contract killing in England. Prosecutors said the Swedish criminal network Foxtrot hired the teenager, who was arrested in Huddersfield last year with two weapons.
