Maltese opposition criticises government as national debt nears €12 billion

Malta's opposition Nationalist Party has raised concerns over national debt levels approaching €12 billion, alongside ongoing debate over business investment sentiment.
Malta’s opposition Nationalist Party (PN) has intensified its criticism of the government's economic management following data from the National Statistics Office showing national debt approaching €12 billion. The PN warned that adding roughly €1 billion in debt during an election year will lead to significantly higher interest costs for taxpayers.
The fiscal debate comes alongside continued disagreement over local business sentiment. The PN recently highlighted survey results showing that 78% of small and medium-sized enterprise owners across Malta and Gozo are either uncertain or unwilling to invest over the next 12 months, a claim the government has rejected.
Amid the broader economic discussions, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that utility service charges for water and electricity for local fishermen will be reduced by up to 57%.
