Kosovo begins DNA identification after exhuming remains of 23 war victims

Authorities in Kosovo and ICMP experts are initiating DNA testing to identify the mortal remains of at least 23 war victims exhumed in Zubin Potok.
Kosovo authorities and international specialists have concluded exhumations across three locations in the northern municipality of Zubin Potok, recovering mortal remains belonging to at least 23 individuals suspected to be victims of the 1998–1999 Kosovo conflict.
Following the completion of site excavations on August 21, the identification process will now transition to forensic and genetic testing. Samira Krehić, head of the Western Balkans program for the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), stated that ICMP will conduct DNA analysis to assist Kosovo's Governmental Commission on Missing Persons. Genetic profiles extracted from the remains will be cross-referenced with reference samples collected from families of missing persons to formally identify the victims.
