Johnson & Johnson agrees to $5.5 billion settlement in baby powder lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5 billion to resolve nearly all remaining lawsuits alleging its talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer.
American consumer goods and pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson has announced a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging its talc-based baby powder caused ovarian cancer.
According to the company, the agreement aims to resolve approximately 99.75 percent of the remaining legal claims against it. Litigants have long contended that the company's talcum products were contaminated with asbestos, leading to severe health complications. Johnson & Johnson has consistently rejected the allegations, maintaining that its baby powder is safe and does not cause cancer. The multi-billion-dollar agreement is intended to conclude years of costly and complex litigation across the United States.
