Identification process begins for 23 war victims found in northern Kosovo

Forensic experts in Kosovo have initiated complex DNA testing to identify at least 23 victims from the 1998–1999 conflict following exhumations in Zubin Potok.
Forensic procedures are underway to identify the remains of at least 23 individuals exhumed from three sites in Zubin Potok, northern Kosovo. Kosovo's Governmental Commission on Missing Persons and the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) confirmed that field exhumations concluded on August 21, launching a complex multi-stage laboratory analysis.
Speaking on the process, ICMP Western Balkans head Samira Krehiq highlighted that recovering the remains is only the initial phase. Forensic specialists will extract DNA profiles from bone samples and cross-reference them with genetic data collected from families of people missing since the 1998–1999 Kosovo conflict. The identification efforts aim to provide closure to relatives after decades of uncertainty.
