Icelandic Climate Minister Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson has called for treating the risk of Atlantic ocean current collapse as a national security issue.

Iceland's Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate, Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, has urged governments to treat climate risks—particularly the potential weakening or collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation—as a national security matter.

Speaking at the Arctic Circle assembly in Reykjavík alongside climate scientist Johan Rockström, Jóhannsson stressed that the potential disruption of major ocean circulation systems poses severe threats to the region. He called for public authorities to take scientific warnings seriously and integrate climate risks into broader national security frameworks.
