Hungary implements energy curbs following unprecedented Paks nuclear plant shutdown
Hungary has introduced strict energy-saving measures following the historic complete shutdown of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, raising concerns over regional electricity prices.
Hungary has introduced energy-saving measures, including switching off public building lights, ordering civil servants to work from home, and curtailing public transport in Budapest alongside overnight rail freight. The restrictions follow a complete shutdown of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, marking the facility's first total closure in its 44-year history.
Speaking to Czech Radio, former Slovak economy minister and energy expert Karel Hirman warned that halting operations at Paks would suppress economic growth and drive up regional electricity prices beyond Hungary's borders. Local authorities in Budapest have already reduced metro and tram services in response to the tightening power supply.
