Eastern German state authorities and educators are rolling out new initiatives to address political extremism and historical education ahead of regional elections.

Ahead of upcoming state elections in eastern Germany, educational institutions and state authorities are introducing new initiatives to address political extremism and reshape historical education. In Thuringia, the education ministry has partnered with the University of Jena to deploy constitutional coaches to support schools dealing with anti-democratic tendencies and a rise in far-right symbols among students.

Concurrently, Evelyn Zupke, the federal commissioner for SED dictatorship victims, called for mandatory student visits to former East German memorial sites to address gaps in historical knowledge. These efforts coincide with intense debates on regional identity, as proposals by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to restrict funding for cultural initiatives deemed "anti-German" trigger concern regarding the future of historical memorials and local theaters.
