French Constitutional Council clears end-of-life law while striking down social media ban

France's Constitutional Council approved an end-of-life care law with reservations while invalidating a proposed social media ban for under-15s.
France’s Constitutional Council validated legislation establishing a right to end-of-life care, issuing three interpretative reservations. Among these is an institutional conscience clause enabling private and religious healthcare facilities to opt out of providing assisted dying services. President Emmanuel Macron commended the decision, stating it completed an "exemplary democratic debate," clearing the way for the law's official enactment.
In a separate ruling, the council struck down a central provision of a digital safety bill intended to ban children under 15 from accessing social media platforms. Magistrates determined that the blanket prohibition disproportionately infringed upon personal freedoms, effectively invalidating a key government initiative.
