France's Constitutional Council validates end-of-life law while striking down social media ban for minors
France's Constitutional Council has approved assisted dying legislation while rejecting a proposed social media ban for minors under 15.
France's Constitutional Council has validated legislation establishing a conditional right to assisted dying, clearing the path for its official promulgation. In its decision, the court issued three interpretative reservations, notably affirming a conscience clause that permits private and religious healthcare facilities to refrain from administering end-of-life procedures. President Emmanuel Macron commended the ruling, describing it as the outcome of an exemplary democratic debate.
In a separate decision, the council struck down the primary provision of a digital regulation bill that aimed to restrict social media access for minors under 15 years old. The justices ruled that an outright prohibition constitutes a disproportionate infringement on public liberties, invalidating a central pillar of the administration's youth protection initiative.
