France’s Constitutional Council has approved conditional assisted dying while striking down a social media ban for minors under 15.

France’s Constitutional Council has approved landmark legislation establishing a conditional right to assisted dying while striking down a proposed social media ban for children under 15.

The council ruled that defining end-of-life policy falls under parliamentary authority, though it issued interpretative reservations, including a conscience clause allowing private and religious healthcare institutions to opt out. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ruling, stating it completed an "exemplary democratic debate."

Conversely, the court invalidated the primary provision of a bill banning social media for minors under 15, declaring it an excessive restriction on public liberties. The ruling blocks a major legislative goal for the French government.
