France's Constitutional Council has validated an assisted dying law with conscience clauses while striking down a proposed social media ban for under-15s.

France’s Constitutional Council has approved landmark legislation establishing a conditional right to assisted dying, while simultaneously rejecting a proposed ban on social media for children under 15.

The high court ruled that framing end-of-life legislation falls within parliamentary authority. However, justices issued interpretative reservations to protect conscience rights, allowing private and Catholic healthcare institutions to opt out of providing the procedure. President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ruling, calling it the conclusion of an "exemplary democratic debate."

In a separate ruling, the council struck down the primary provision of a bill seeking a blanket social media ban for minors under 15, declaring the measure a disproportionate restriction on public liberties. The decision effectively halts a key legislative initiative championed by the French president.
