Former Ukrainian defense chief urges preparations for post-war elections

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has urged lawmakers to prepare for eventual elections, despite ongoing martial law restrictions.
Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, has urged Ukrainian authorities to lay the groundwork for upcoming national elections. While martial law currently prohibits holding elections during the ongoing conflict, Fedorov emphasized that technical and legislative frameworks must be established ahead of time.
The initiative aims to ensure democratic continuity and address complex logistical challenges, such as organizing voting procedures for millions of displaced citizens, overseas refugees, and active military personnel once conditions permit. Ukrainian leadership has not announced a timeline for ending martial law or scheduling national polls.
