A South Korean court sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to a suspended 18-month prison term for election law violations.

A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to an 18-month suspended prison sentence for violating election laws during his 2022 campaign.

The court found Yoon guilty of making false statements while campaigning for the presidency. Although handed an 18-month prison term, the execution of the sentence was suspended for three years. Should the ruling be upheld following an appeal, Yoon's political party could be required to reimburse approximately $27 million (39.7 billion won) in public campaign funds provided by the country's National Election Commission.
