EU sanctions Iranian officials over execution of Swedish citizen

The European Union has imposed travel bans and asset freezes on six Iranian individuals following the execution of a Swedish national in Iran.
The European Union has imposed sanctions against six individuals, including five judges, following the execution of a Swedish citizen in Iran.
According to Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, the penalised individuals participated in a "flawed legal process that led to the execution of a Swedish citizen in Iran". The Swedish national was initially detained by Iranian authorities in June 2025 before being executed in March.
Under the measures approved by the EU Council of Ministers on Friday, the targeted Iranian officials face an immediate freeze on any assets held within the bloc and are prohibited from entering EU territory.
