An Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the largest on record in the country, with the World Health Organization reporting 3,605 confirmed cases as of August 1. The virus has reached 49 health zones across five provinces.

Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders warned that the disease is spreading at an "unprecedented pace," describing the situation as increasingly critical despite emergency medical responses. Meanwhile, public health authorities have initiated clinical trials for vaccines and therapeutics targeting the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in an effort to curb further transmission.
