Debates over far-right extremism in schools, DDR history, cultural funding, and teacher shortages intensify in eastern Germany ahead of state elections.

Ahead of upcoming state elections, political and educational debates are intensifying across eastern Germany. Educators in eastern schools report rising far-right behavior among students, including the use of illegal symbols. In response to gaps in historical knowledge, federal commissioner for SED victims Evelyn Zupke proposed making student visits to East German memorial sites compulsory.

Cultural policy has also become a major campaign issue. In Saxony-Anhalt, where the Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads in polls, the party's proposal to defund "anti-German" projects has raised concerns among cultural institutions and Holocaust memorials. Meanwhile, in Berlin, public education faces administrative challenges as nearly 400 teachers have remained on sick leave for more than a year.
