Dutch electricity prices doubled due to drought in Eastern Europe, while the UN warned El Niño could leave 50 million more people food insecure.

Wholesale electricity prices in the Netherlands have surged to between €150 and €200 per megawatt-hour, up from around €80 last month, following drought-related cooling water shortages at power plants in Eastern Europe. The price spike primarily affects consumers on dynamic energy contracts.

Simultaneously, the United Nations World Food Programme warned that climate disruptions linked to El Niño, including severe droughts and flooding, could push an additional 50 million people into severe food insecurity by late 2027.

In environmental policy, Dutch legislation designed to hold clothing manufacturers accountable for textile waste is facing scrutiny. Reports indicate companies are fulfilling legal obligations by paying minimal administrative fees per garment rather than advancing circular recycling practices.
