Czech experts highlight animal emotional capacity and complex communication

Czech experts discussed animal welfare and cognition, emphasizing that animals experience complex emotions and exhibit advanced communication skills.
Experts discussing animal welfare on Czech radio emphasized that scientific understanding of animal cognition and emotional capacity has advanced significantly since historical views treated animals as emotionless mechanisms.
During the debate, Brno Zoo Director Radana Dungelová stated that animals experience primary emotions—including fear, anger, and frustration—in ways comparable to humans. She noted that animals demonstrate the ability to learn from past errors, experience satisfaction from tasks, and anticipate future events. Panelists also highlighted sophisticated communication methods observed across species, noting that researchers have even identified grammatical patterns in the vocalizations of prairie dogs.
