A restricted Orange Order parade in Portadown was blocked on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters assembled along Garvaghy Road.

Tensions persist in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after a contentious Orange Order parade was prevented from passing through Garvaghy Road on Sunday. A late-night High Court ruling had upheld a Parades Commission decision permitting a restricted, silent march of 35 participants between 08:00 and 09:30 local time. It marked the first permitted procession along the predominantly nationalist route since the late 1990s.

However, thousands of counter-protesters, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill, gathered to block Garvaghy Road, preventing the marchers from departing Drumcree Church. Following standoffs and growing crowds, police halted the procession from advancing. Discussions involving organizers, community leaders, and law enforcement continued at the historic Troubles flashpoint as both groups remained in the area.
