Chinese military researchers used top US AI models for defense development, analysis shows

Chinese military researchers have utilized outputs generated by leading American artificial intelligence models to train domestic defense systems, according to an analysis of more than 80 Chinese academic papers and patents.

The research indicates that technology developed by prominent United States firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic, was employed to enhance China's national security and defense capabilities. Despite export controls and terms of service intended to prevent military or dual-use applications of advanced American software, researchers successfully leveraged synthetic data and model outputs to train local algorithms. The findings highlight the significant challenges Western technology developers and regulators face in preventing strategic AI capabilities from being repurposed by foreign defense entities.
