China continues purchasing Iranian oil through independent refineries and alternative finance to prevent Tehran's geopolitical collapse, according to Sinologist Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik.

China is providing critical economic support to Iran to prevent the country's collapse amid heightened Middle Eastern tensions, according to Sinologist Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik. Speaking in an interview with Die Zeit, the expert noted that Beijing relies on small, independent refineries to purchase the bulk of Iran's oil exports. This trade utilizes barter arrangements and shadow financial networks to circumvent international sanctions.

Weigelin-Schwiedrzik highlighted that while Chinese President Xi Jinping is not unconditionally aligned with Tehran, Beijing aims to prevent a scenario where Iran loses its strategic position. Alongside its economic lifeline, China also provides indirect military assistance. However, Beijing remains cautious about entering a formal alliance, seeking to maintain balance in its regional diplomatic relations while securing energy imports.
