Cameroonian weightlifter Madias Ngake fled the 2012 London Olympics after his homosexuality was revealed, leaving him unable to collect his retrospective medal.

Madias Ngake, a 34-year-old weightlifter from Cameroon, fled during the London 2012 Olympic Games after his sexual orientation was disclosed. Ngake, who was awarded an Olympic medal retrospectively following re-tests of other competitors, has never seen or received his medal due to his forced exile.

In Cameroon, homosexuality remains illegal and punishable by law, prompting the athlete to seek asylum abroad after his sexuality became public during the games. Despite achieving an Olympic podium finish, Ngake’s displacement prevented him from claiming his award or returning home safely, illustrating the severe risks encountered by LGBTQ+ athletes in countries where non-heterosexual orientations are criminalised.
