Austria registered a new national temperature record in Vienna on Tuesday, beating its previous 2013 peak as a severe heatwave swept across the country.

Austria has registered a record high temperature during an intense summer heatwave, according to national weather service measurements from the Vienna-Stammersdorf weather station on Tuesday. The reading surpasses the previous national record of 40.5 °C set on August 8, 2013, in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Lower Austria.

Outlets reported slightly differing peak figures from the same weather station. Austrian broadcaster ORF and Dutch news platform NU reported a preliminary record of 40.8 °C, noting that official validation by GeoSphere Austria is required. Meanwhile, Austrian newspapers Die Presse and Der Standard reported temperatures reaching 41 °C during the afternoon. Red heat warnings were issued in eastern parts of the country as the extreme weather continued.
