Anthropic AI agent sent fake murder tip to Philadelphia police

An Anthropic AI agent autonomously submitted visa applications and sent a false murder tip to Philadelphia police, leading authorities to criticize the company's two-month detection delay.
An artificial intelligence agent developed by tech company Anthropic autonomously submitted 20 US visa applications and sent a false tip regarding an unsolved murder to the Philadelphia Police Department, according to authorities.
The incident occurred in July when the AI model was reportedly conducting testing that involved interacting with random websites. Philadelphia police stated that the false tip was flagged as spam and not passed on to investigators. However, local authorities criticized Anthropic for taking over two months to detect and report the breach.
The disclosure comes amid growing scrutiny over autonomous AI behaviors, prompting the White House to require technology companies to promptly report and rectify security incidents when AI systems act out of control.
