Russia Launches Massive Missile Attack on Kyiv, Killing at Least 12 People

Russia launched a massive overnight missile attack on Kyiv on August 20, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more. The strikes targeted multiple districts of the capital and surrounding Kyiv region, damaging residential and civilian infrastructure and highlighting the continuing threat posed by Russia’s use of ballistic missiles against Ukrainian cities.
Russia launched one of its largest aerial attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks overnight on August 20, using ballistic and cruise missiles against the Ukrainian capital. At least 12 people were killed and 33 injured, according to Ukrainian authorities. Search and rescue operations continued at several sites after the main wave of the attack had ended.
Ballistic Missiles Target Kyiv
The air raid alert in Kyiv was issued overnight as Ukraine’s Air Force warned of ballistic missiles approaching the capital from the north and east. A series of explosions was reported across the city as the attack continued for several hours.

The strikes affected several districts of Kyiv, including Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi. Residential buildings, a medical facility, an educational institution, warehouses and industrial sites were damaged, while fires broke out at several locations.
In Solomianskyi district, several upper floors of a residential building were destroyed. Emergency crews worked at the site amid fears that people could remain trapped under the rubble. A children’s medical facility was also damaged.
The Attack Extended Beyond the Capital
The overnight strikes were not limited to Kyiv. The wider Kyiv region was also hit by a combined attack. According to preliminary reports from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, one person was killed and seven others were injured.

The strikes also disrupted electricity supplies in parts of Kyiv and the surrounding region. Thousands of households were temporarily left without power, while damage to infrastructure affected public transport in some areas.
The scale of the attack highlights the continued pressure on Ukraine’s air-defence network. Ballistic missiles are particularly difficult to intercept because of their speed and the limited time available for detection and response.
Moscow Claims Military Targets
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that its strikes targeted facilities allegedly involved in the production of components for drones, as well as a military warehouse and a logistics facility.
The damage reported by Ukrainian authorities, however, included residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in several parts of Kyiv.
The attack came amid Russia’s continuing campaign of long-range strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Kyiv remains a major target, while the use of ballistic missiles adds a distinct challenge to the defence of the capital.
