Putin’s Regime Transfers Terror to the Poland: Foiled Assassination Attempt in Warsaw

An operation by Polish security services in Warsaw may have prevented a political assassination ordered by the Russian regime. On August 7, the Internal Security Agency (ABW), in cooperation with the Police and partners from the US, detained a citizen of the Russian Federation who was preparing an execution on Polish territory. As revealed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the target of the attack was a person holding dual US and Ukrainian citizenship who was deemed exceptionally "inconvenient" by those behind the Kremlin plot. According to Polish media, the intended target was the well-known Ukrainian video blogger, actor, and rapper Albert Vasilyev—known professionally as Kyivstoner or Slevin Dadyan. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) had accused him of managing the supply logistics for drones used to attack targets in the Moscow region.
Initial reports indicated only the detention of a hitman and stated that the target was a person connected to the arms industry holding US and Ukrainian citizenship. Albert Vasilyev (who uses the artistic pseudonyms Kyivstoner or Slevin Dadyan) is a prominent figure in Ukrainian pop art and the music scene—he gained fame as the creator of humorous online videos and as one of the pillars of the immensely popular group Hryby, before continuing a successful solo career. Following Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine in 2022, the artist strongly and publicly condemned the Kremlin’s actions.

Materials gathered by investigators show that Albert Vasilyev was placed on the FSB’s list of individuals involved in extremist and terrorist activities. The Kremlin accuses the musician of secretly collaborating with Ukrainian military intelligence under the guise of his artistic and media activities. According to the FSB, the rapper personally supervised and managed a complex logistical network responsible for smuggling drones that attacked strategic targets within Moscow and on the outskirts of the Russian capital. The route for the smuggled drones reportedly ran from Slovakia, through the territories of Poland and Belarus, and into Russia. Vasilyev himself categorically rejects these allegations.
Precise ABW Strike and the American Connection
According to information provided by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Minister of the Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak, a 29-year-old Russian citizen and resident of Russian-occupied Donbas was detained in Warsaw on August 7. The man was recruited by Russian special services (most likely military intelligence GRU or the Federal Security Service) with a clear and specific task: to carry out the physical liquidation of the designated target in Warsaw.
Investigators' findings indicate that the planned assassination was neither random nor criminal in nature—it was a precisely prepared political assassination targeting a single individual whose activities actively undermined the political and military interests of the Moscow regime. During a special press conference, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that foiling the plot was made possible by the swift and efficient work of ABW officers and the Police, though top-secret intelligence cooperation with US services also played a crucial role. "The evidence gathered allowed for charges to be brought against the man," reads an official statement from the police, who have not provided further details regarding the case.
A Historical Precedent on NATO Territory
As security analysts point out, this is the first documented attempt by Russian intelligence to make a direct attempt on the life of a US citizen on the territory of a NATO member state. Previous sabotage operations and assassinations carried out by Moscow in Europe—such as the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom or the murder of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin's Tiergarten park—typically targeted former agents, Chechen dissidents, or citizens of former Soviet states. Targeting an American citizen on Polish soil crosses yet another red line set by Washington and the Alliance.
The fact that the intended victim also held Ukrainian citizenship suggests that he may have been involved in key military, financial, or informational support projects for Kyiv, or possessed unique knowledge about Kremlin power structures. For the Putin regime, eliminating such figures is becoming part of a broader strategy aimed at terrifying Western societies and paralyzing support for Ukraine in its struggle.
Anatomy of Russian Sabotage in Poland
The incident in Warsaw is not an isolated case; rather, it fits into a broader, increasingly aggressive pattern of hybrid activities that the Russian Federation has been conducting in Poland since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. For months, Polish special services have been reporting an increasing intensity of recruitment and sabotage operations by Russian and Belarusian intelligence agencies.
In recent months, the ABW has dismantled several espionage and sabotage networks. However, standard Russian tactics have evolved:
- Disposable Operatives ("Expendables"): Increasingly, young people from third countries are recruited via encrypted messaging apps like Telegram to do the dirty work—such as arson, acts of railway sabotage, or gathering intelligence on critical infrastructure.
- Targeted Direct Assassinations: The case of the 29-year-old Russian demonstrates a return to traditional, professional execution methods, where the operation is directly led by a recruited intelligence operative supplied with logistical support and weaponry.
- Information Warfare and Disinformation: Parallel to physical actions, Moscow's propaganda apparatus conducts aggressive campaigns aimed at sowing discord between Poles and Ukrainians, undermining trust in state institutions, and instilling a sense of insecurity in the daily lives of citizens.
A New Security Reality
The foiling of the assassination plot coincides with intensive efforts by government bodies responsible for the country's counterintelligence shield. Polish authorities emphasize that Poland currently stands on the frontline of the hybrid war in Europe.
The detention of the prospective Russian assassin in Warsaw is yet another unmistakable signal to all of Europe: the war launched by Vladimir Putin has long surpassed the geographical borders of Ukraine. Moscow does not hesitate to resort to the most drastic measures, attempting to carry out executions in the capitals of NATO member states and undermine the foundations of European security.
