Spain processes asylum claims in Ceuta as military deployment continues
Spanish authorities begin processing asylum claims in Ceuta while maintaining naval and land deployments amid differing migrant count estimates.
Spanish authorities have begun processing the first asylum applications in Ceuta following a recent influx through the Tarajal border crossing. While border operations are gradually returning to normal, some minors have reportedly swum back to Morocco independently.
To secure the enclave, Spain’s Defence and Interior ministries have deployed three naval vessels alongside extra riot police units. Meanwhile, significant discrepancies persist regarding the situation on the ground. Central government representatives state that roughly 2,500 migrants remain in Ceuta, whereas local officials estimate the figure at 6,000. Reporting also indicates friction between Spanish ministries over military involvement in border detentions and Madrid's diplomatic approach toward Morocco.
