French authorities report over 14,000 fires this season while Greek firefighters deploy water bombers to contain renewed blazes west of Athens.

Firefighters and authorities across southern Europe continue responding to widespread summer wildfires. In France, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that 14,540 fires or fire starts have been recorded this season. Police have arrested 402 individuals in connection with arson, including 156 minors, with 36 people currently remaining in custody. Meanwhile, evacuated residents in Gironde, including those in Le Porge, have begun returning to inspect severely damaged properties.

In Greece, emergency crews entered their fifth consecutive day combating blazes west of Athens that have devastated thousands of hectares of forest and farmland. While Greek fire officials reported a marked improvement in overall conditions, aerial water-bombing operations were dispatched near Megara following afternoon flare-ups.
